Economic crises and de-escalation in Russian foreign policy(1991-2025)

Abstract

The Russian foreign policy towards the West, after the historical meeting between Putin and Trump in Alaska, has become an important issue in international diplomacy. The main issue of this article is to examine the correlation between economic crises in Russia and the policy of de-escalation toward the West . This study hypothesizes that there is a significant correlation between the severity of economic crises and the pursuit of de-escalation in Russian foreign policy after the Cold War. The economic data show that Russian economic crises have been the most important reason for adopting a policy of de-escalation toward the West, and the continuation of this policy has also led to the improvement of economic indicators in Russia. However, the effectiveness of this strategy is contingent upon favorable international contexts and the management of tension-inducing factors, including NATO's expansion towards Russia's borders, alongside the role of international institutions and organizations in facilitating de-escalation. This study was theoretically grounded on the framework of interdependence and employed the process tracing method. The data collection method included desk studies utilizing reliable statistical sources.
