Transition to Democracy: The Role and Impact of Army in Egyptian Transformation (2011-2013)

Abstract

For the far-reaching and globalization of democracy principles in one hand, and being authoritarian and undemocratic political regimes in Arabic middle east on the other hand, it is accepted that people uprising on 2011 in this region was a kind of democratic transition. People revolutionary uprising in Egypt shows that youth have been it basic agent. But a point is forgotten in analyzing the 2011-2013 transformation id role and impact army in transitional process and conclusion.
This research, by descriptive – analytical method, pay attention to study the role and explain the impact of army on the transformation. In this manner, and with employ the Paul Brucker and Alfred Stepan theories, it is concluded that army, although act as government in 1950 decade, but in the past 60 years with influence in economical and political areas could become powerful institute. Act as institute allow army to be mediate in the transitional process, and for confrontation with Islamists authoritarianism, by support of liberals on the protection the national interest an alibi managed the transition, and again gained the power.
