The English School Conception on Expansion of International Society: A Critical Reassessment

Abstract

"International Society" is a focal concept in IR English School, which has been examined in structural, institutional, and historical. Within historical approach to "International Society", the idea of the Expansion of International Society has been developed. Having identified the English School classic conception on Expansion of International Society, the paper seeks to analyse the evolution of views presented by ES scholars on expansion of International Society through trend-tracing and content analysis method.  In this framework, it can be argued that since the commencement of theorization on Expansion of International Society, two distinct generations of elaborations/critiques on Expansion of International Society have emerged: first, those positing classic conception on Expansion of International Society, and second, those seeking to go beyond it through developing an alternative concept within ES. Having evaluated both two distinct generations, the paper summarizes that adequacy and perfectness of idea of the Expansion may require going beyond IR English School theory. Thus given the impact of historical sociology macro-appraoch on views presented by both two distinct generations, it can be suggested that the evolution of international society, traditionally referred to as the Expansion, can be addressed as “historical sociology of international society”.
