Abstract
Abstract: Fossil fuel scarcity and climate change have further increased the importance of renewable and clean sources of energy. Even major fossil fuel exporters, such as Saudi Arabia and Russia, are exploring renewable energy options to diversify their energy mix. Hydrogen is a promising alternative source of energy that can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contribute to de-carbonization, and enhance energy security. The primary method of industrial hydrogen production currently involves the use of natural gas. As the world’s largest owner of natural gas resources, Russia intends to dominate the future global hydrogen market. However, the industrial-scale expansion of renewable sources of energy necessitates significant investments and advanced technology. This study aims to analyze the effects of Western sanctions on Russia's strategies and plans for the renewable energy sector, specifically in hydrogen production, amidst the escalating tensions between Russia and the West resulting from the Ukrainian crisis and Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. This qualitative, descriptive-analytical study employs desk studies as the data collection tool.
