Abstract

The expansion of artificial intelligence and its integration with the platform economy constitute one of the most significant structural transformations of power in contemporary politics, posing a serious challenge to the foundations of liberal democracy. The convergence of artificial intelligence with surveillance capitalism has transformed behavioral data into a strategic resource for the accumulation of power and has enabled subtle and pervasive forms of political control even within ostensibly democratic frameworks, such that the functional mechanisms of democracy are gradually eroded from within.

Drawing on the theoretical framework of Hannah Arendt, this article seeks to address the question of what relationship exists between the expansion of data driven surveillance capitalism and totalitarianism. The central hypothesis of the study posits that the synergy between data driven surveillance capitalism and authoritarian populism may give rise to a third generation of totalitarianism, which may be described as “algorithmic totalitarianism,” of which the Trump administration currently represents a concrete manifestation. The research adopts an analytical–descriptive method, and the data have been collected through library-based research.
