[English]

Iranology in the Russian Federation constitutes a field of paramount importance that, owing to diverse political, scholarly, and linguistic factors, has thus far failed to have its full scholarly potential adequately identified or exploited. The present study, adopting a qualitative approach and utilizing analytical historiography and case study methodologies, investigates Iranology during the Tsarist period in Russia. Drawing upon Russian-language sources with the objective of bringing attention to this Russian academic domain, it examines the historical development of Iranology in Russia from the 17th to the 20th century, identifies its principal representatives, and delineates the prevailing trends and approaches therein. The research findings indicate that Iran was extensively examined by Russian Iranologists, with their areas of inquiry encompassing a wide array of subjects. The investigators conclude that Iranology in Russia is rooted in a longstanding tradition profoundly interconnected with the geopolitical and diplomatic relations between the two countries. These studies, which took shape during the “Great Game” period to comprehend a strategic rival and neighbor, were not solely academic endeavors but also functioned as instruments for the political and colonial ambitions of the Russian Empire.
