Some people may think that metaphor could only be applied in literature and poetry, but it might be used in very various fields such as experimental sciences, psychology, linguistics, politics, and so on as well. In fact, metaphor is used to explain complicated issues and intangible phenomenon through a tangible and understandable language. In politics, particularly in foreign policy, metaphor is applied for different purposes. This paper was aimed at studying the metaphorical language in different foreign policy discourses of Iran through an explanatory-analytical method so that to identify the role played by metaphorical language in Iran’s foreign policy discourse and to determine the relationship between metaphorical thought and language and the world of politics. To this end, the authors have applied Layoff and Johnson’s (1980) classification of metaphors. The speech texts of Iranian presidents and a public executive were analyzed through Layoff and Johnson’s (1980) framework for metaphor. According to this framework, the metaphors are categorized in three main groups: structural, orientation, entity and substance. The findings of this paper indicated that metaphorical phrases and sentences could be used for decoding the reality of political leaders’ speech. It also showed that structural metaphors were used more frequently that orientation and entity metaphors, however the latter were more effective than structural metaphors, since they are creative rather than conventional metaphors.
